CONTINUED FROM 'THE PRIZED'
*Note: Toledo Surprise and Solstice were entrusted to JA by Sherlock when she left, and this is their arrival.
Lani was hooking Sterling up in the cross ties after her longe in the round pen when Chris joined her and put Danezora next to the frisky filly. The pair talked as they brushed down their horses, and introduced the new residents to curious Mike and Emily. The two thoroughbreds were docile and quiet when the Justice Acres trailer pulled up for a second time that day, and suddenly all of the animals were on their toes again, eager for another new arrival. Teeco was first to arrive at the scene, followed by Dustin – who had been worn out by a game of catch-me-if-you-can with Mike and Emily. The golden retriever panted as he lay down on his stomach, watching the trailer ramp come down again, revealing two golden rumps. The flaxen tailed rump came out first, led by Lani. The palomino stallion inspected his new surroundings, and raised a foreleg to paw at the air. Lani got the palomino out of the way so that Chris could bring out Solstice, and suddenly all got quiet. These were two horses that they had watched, and competed against for so long – but now the two stallions were under their roof. Toledo Surprise lowered his head to take a whiff of Dustin, and pricked his fluted ears forward in curiosity. Solstice soon joined him. Dogs weren’t new to the pair – but birds were. As soon as Teeco saw the newcomers, he squawked his greeting.
”Hola!”
Both stallions threw up their heads. Mr. Duce tensed up. All of them begged one thing – Teeco…please don’t….
”Hola! I come in peace!” Teeco flapped down from his perch on the barn roof, and the two thoroughbreds shied away from him, every muscle tensed as this talking bird waddled up to them.
”Mars!”
Solstice half reared, rolling his eyes back. Surprise flared his nostrils, and leaned into Lani.
”I like pie.”
That did it – Solstice wasn’t sticking around. The chestnut bolt, ripping the lead rope from Chris hands and leaving them skinned and red. Surprise tried to follow, but Mr. Duce was already beside Lani, grabbing onto the lead rope as well. Between the two of them, they were able to hold him down.
Dustin – seeing the loose horse, bounded after him. The golden retriever was on the chase, and all of the horses turned out in the paddocks whinnied in excitement. The newborn foals and their mothers were in one paddock, and the mares whinnied to the galloping thoroughbred. Solstice’s ears pricked at the sound of mares, and the stallion slowly came to a halt by their pasture, curving his head over the fence and greeting them all, including the young foals.
Dustin was able to catch up with him quickly, and the retriever barked as he came around the stallions side, driving him forward again, but this time back towards his humans. Solstice shook his head and cantered on, driven by the dog one fourth his size. Surprise whinnied to his buddy, and Solstice was soon reclaimed by Chris.
Teeco looked very put out, and so went to go complain to Baron, his feline friend who was no doubt sleeping somewhere in the hayloft.
Mr. Duce chuckled as he stroked and patted his dog. Dustin wagged his tail vigorously, and leaned into his master’s praise.
”Alright, let’s get these guys in before something else happens,” Mr. Duce grinned.
