Just Kiss the Girl rested her head on Chris’ shoulder, and heaved a grass-scented sigh. The jockey ran his hand gently down her striped nose, allowing the mare to rest. He didn’t have to take a look at the bay thoroughbred to know that she was heavy with foal, and it wouldn’t be long before they had to move her to isolation.
That was also the case for the other mares who were to be a part of the spring foal crop. Thee Warning had a significant bulge in her stomach, and was currently standing with Crazy in Love, carefully grooming the other mother-to-be with her teeth. Love stretched out her neck gratefully, and let her eyelids droop as sleep overcame her.
Apache’s Star, as usual, stood alone in her corner of the pasture. She was busy soaking up the rays of sunlight on her black coat, and for once looked extremely content. Star kicked out with a hind leg suddenly, and jerkily nipped at her stomach when the growing foal inside of her started scooting around, but soon all was quiet again.
A breeze of fresh air twirled through the paddock, winding through the horse's mane and blowing against their fuzzy coats. Spring was getting closer, and all of the horses were beginning to shed their winter overcoat. The days were getting warmer, and the wind less chilling. Today, all of the horses had been turned out without their blankets on, and all but the pregnant mares had celebrated by rolling in the new sprouting grass, because the broodmares weren't agile enough for such an act - although Kiss had tried.
Chris patted Kiss on the shoulder, and was about to let the ladies be, until Teeco - JA's faithful maccaw fluttered in onto the fence. Kiss pricked her ears, as well as Tee. Star twitched her tail in irritation and flickered her ears backward - she was not one of Teeco's biggest fans. But Love, however, was crazy about Teeco. The thoroughbred mare jogged over to her buddy, and the multicolored bird sidled over to her.
"Purty purty pony," Teeco purred, and hopped onto his friend's broad back. Love stretched her neck around to sniff at the maccaw, and Teeco fluttered his wings. "Good night Teeco. SQUAWK. Good night Teeco."
Love whickered to the bird, and patiently began to walk, and went about searching for some choice bits of grass.
"Giddyup!" Teeco bounced up and down, flapping his wings. "High ho!"
Chris chuckled at the bird, and gave Kiss' shoulder one last pat before turning to leave. Kiss didn't pay much attention to him, she was too busy watching Teeco. But as Chris started to walk away, Kiss craned her neck around and nickered for him to reconsider leaving. Chris peered back over his shoulder, and bid the bay thoroughbred good-bye.
"Make sure Teeco doesn't burn the place down, okay?"
Kiss flared her nostrils, but didn't take her eyes off of Chris. But as he walked farther away, it got harder for her to see him around the bulge of her stomach. Kiss whickered one more time for him o come back, but when he didn't, heaved a sigh and went off to join Tee.
