From underneath the trees, we watch the sky
Confusing stars for satellites
I never dreamed that you'd be mine
But here we are, we're here tonight
Singing Amen, I, I'm alive
Singing Amen, I, I'm alive
The air lay undisturbed, birds huddled in their nests for the night and horses settled down in their stalls. All except one. Dark orbs were wide awake, and fluted ears were pricked forward, listening intently. Perfectly carved head was pressed against the top half of the door that had been closed until morning, and she stared purposefully at the wood. Warm breath escaped from her nostrils, and she swished her dark tassels to keep herself occupied. Suddenly, a noise echoed from down the aisle, and footsteps could be heard. The mare raised her striped face as though she could see through her top door, and listened to sleepy whinnies of horses who thought it was breakfast time.
”Sh-sh-sh. Go back to sleep guys.” The low voice brought several whickers from behind stall doors, but the bay mare released a faithful whinny. She pawed against her stall door as the footsteps came closer, and she plunged her head through as soon as the top door was opened. Chris wiped away the slobbery kiss that Kiss gave him, and he chuckled as he took her head gently in both hands.
”Let’s get out of here baby,” Chris muttered, grabbing her halter and lead rope. Kiss followed willingly as Chris led her out of her stall, and jealous whinnies and snorts followed them out the double doors. Kiss nudged Chris’ shoulder as he brought her to a halt, and stood patiently as Chris put both his hands on her solid, short back and hopped up. As soon as his right leg slid over her back, Kiss took off at a trot, long legs sliding easily over the ground. Chris grabbed a hold of her mane, and sat easily to the effortless trot. Kiss didn’t even question Chris’ peculiar choice of time, she was just delighted to get out of her stall. Her feminine build was structured with well toned muscles, and her long neck stretched out in the relaxed motion. Everything about her seemed perfectly balanced and flawless. She’d matured so much from the day Justice Acres had first purchased her…and not only did she change in herself, she had changed the people who were lucky enough to know her.
The pair disappeared into a grove of trees, and Kiss’ eyes were accustomed to the dark. The moon gave more light then there had been in the barn, and she could make everything out perfectly as though it were daytime. Feeling that Kiss was warmed up confident and in her stride, he clucked to her for a canter. The thoroughbred slid easily into the new gait, and her dark tassels tickled at her hocks as the wind streamed through it. Kiss’ nostrils widened with excitement, and her bare back shone with the dappled moonlight. Large hooves crunched on the dead leaves underfoot, and Kiss let out a playful buck. Chris let his smile overtake him, forgetting the burden that weighed down on his shoulders. They cantered through the thick foliage, and Kiss’ eyes caught sight of a small stream stretching across their path. She plunged through it eagerly, lunging forward with every stride as the cool water splashed into her face. Chris laughed as his jean legs became soaked, and he urged on his mount. Kiss hopped up onto the bank on the other side, and continued to canter through the trees, making their own trail.
Kiss dug in her heels as she began to rise up a large hill, her dark coat rippling over thick muscles as she strained to reached the summit. The trees lessened as they neared the peak, and Kiss threw up her head in self victory as she came to the pinnacle of the bluff. Chris leaned back in his seat, and Kiss came down to a halt. The warm night wind blew softly against their backs, and Kiss breathed it in as she looked on to the grassy field in front of her. These were the flood plains, extremely treacherous when there was heavy rain, but when it was dry, it was the perfect place for a gallop. The soil gave firm footing, but it was also soft for the horse’s knees. It looked to be endless, and the bay mare’s ears were directed pointedly towards it. Chris took the hint. In fact, he was feeling the same way.
Letting out a whoop, Chris gave the thoroughbred a firm nudge. Kiss rocketed forward, starting to descend down the bluff, but finally pushing away from it and going airborne. They were flying. For a few brief moments, they truly were. Gravity brought Kiss back down with a thud, but she was still thriving from the feeling. Hind legs tensed as she threw herself forward and exploded into a gallop. Dark legs churned like a blender, and she stretched herself out with every stride. Like a coil, she bunched up together before reaching to her bodily limit, eating up the ground as though she couldn’t get enough of it. Ears pinned back in determination, and her nostrils flared to take in as much air as they could. Chris leaned far over her withers, and squinted his eyes to reduce the stinging. The wind brought tears across his cheeks, and yet he didn’t bother to wipe them away. Kiss was running like she wanted to – no rider trying to hold her back, no restricting bit, no girth around her stomach. Just her, and Chris, and the wind the flew with them...because it was the only thing that could keep up.
Amen I, I'm alive
And in the air the fireflies
Our only light in paradise
We'll show the world they were wrong
And teach them all to sing along
Confusing stars for satellites
I never dreamed that you'd be mine
But here we are, we're here tonight
Singing Amen, I, I'm alive
